Progress Tutorial

Fresh out of my progress tutorial and I am feeling positive! I had a great discussion with Fred and now have questions answered and a direction I need to head in order for me to progress.

The main mission Fred set me in order to help me with this is to come in and set myself a task to complete; I need to research, design and resolve my problem within a day. From speeding up this process I can then see where the holes are within my design, I then know what I need to research in order for me to be able to resolve the problem within the next day. This will ensure I do not begin to go round and round in circles between researching and designing, but actually resolve the problem using the research and designs I have. I can see this being of great help in my development as a designer, so I guess I need to get to it.

Fred also suggested that I engage with the tutors more, when tutors are in the studio I should approach them for a quick chat to show them my work and just get a little focused feedback so that I can then move on from this and push myself further.

In terms of the area of design I wish to specialise in, I discussed with Fred how I had developed an interest into retail design but also still had a strong interest in printed matter. As a result, Fred suggested that I research into all areas (retail, publication and type within branding) then bring all these together within my practice. He suggested that I look at high end editorial and inspirations outside of graphic design, then bring these design elements back into the area of retail. This will then allow me to produce fresh designs that push the boundaries and not just follow the existing style.

As for PPD, I need to continue to research into designers, not just within the field of retail/editorial graphics but others of interest too in order to give me a sense of what they do and how they work. I also need to forget about where I want to be based at this point in time and look at designers internationally and in London, even if I don't see myself working in these areas (although I wouldn't mind living abroad!)

All in all, my progress tutorial was very helpful and has most certainly pointed me in the right direction for now.
